sylvestergaryphotoforobit807Gary D. Sylvester (Ompa), age 68, passed away February 6, 2017 at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born July 28, 1948, to Albert D. Sylvester and Wilma P. (Chamberlain) Sylvester. On July 13, 1968, he married his high school sweetheart, Sherry L. Seidenstucker. They have been blessed with three children: Catherine (Russett) Rothfuss, Gary Sylvester Jr., and Amy (Kevin) Kibbe along with their seven grandchildren: Caleb, Mackenzie and Emily Rothfuss, Megan, Camryn, Lola and Jessica Kibbe.

Gary served his country from 1967-1970 in the United States Army. After serving in the Army, Gary went to work at General Motors as an auto worker. He retired from Delphi in 2000.

In recent years, Gary and Sherry have enjoyed stamp collecting, and frequenting estate sales. They have also been active in the lives of their grandchildren, attending their sporting events, concerts, and other activities. He is a member at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Alp Street in Bay City.

Gary is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren, as well as his sister Donna. He was predeceased by his parents. Sherry and her family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at both McLaren Bay Region and U of M Hospitals. A special thanks to the Survival Flight crew as well as the nursing staff of the Critical Care Medical Unit in Ann Arbor for the extraordinary care they had shown Gary and his family. The Funeral Service will be held Friday, February 10, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. John Lutheran Church, 706 W. Jane Street, Bay City, 48706.  Rev. Paul E. Schaewe will officiate and private interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, under the auspices of the Bay County Veterans Council.  Friends may call at the Squires Funeral Home on Thursday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday after 10:00 a.m.  Those planning and expression of sympathy are asked to consider family wishes.

    We worked with Gary many years ago at the GM Powertrain plant in Bay City. It was always fun to work next to him and he took great pride in everything he did there.
