Walter J. Claes

Bay City, Michigan


     Walter passed away Friday, March 21, 2014 at his home, age 96.  He was born March 2, 1918 in Bay City to the late Christopher and Amelia (Gabriel) Claes.  Walter married Bernice T. Pietruzewski on June 8, 1944 in St. Hedwig Church and she predeceased him on August 26, 2001.  He was a WWII veteran and he served with the US Army from 1941 to 1945.  He retired from Prestolite in 1995 and was a member of St. Hedwig Church, the League of Catholic Men & Women and former president of the Holy Name Society.  Walter volunteered many hours cooking and helping at the church breakfasts and dinners through the years.  He enjoyed playing horseshoes, fishing and camping.

Surviving are two children, Paul Claes and Judy Lybrand, five grandchildren: Terry Lybrand, Andrew (Cathy) Claes, Matthew Claes, Kristina (Brent) Rubis and Stephanie (Mark) Wawrzynowski, 9 great grandchildren, special caregivers and extended family members, Sharon Symbrowski and Kathy Shepard, which Walter thought of more like a daughter and a granddaughter, many nieces and nephews.  Walter was predeceased by one son, Robert Claes, a daughter in-law, Becky Claes and a son in-law, Jerry Lybrand.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 10:00am at St. Hedwig Church.  Fr. Kevin Kerbawy will celebrate Mass and interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Squires Funeral Home on Monday from 2:00 to 8:00pm and at church on Tuesday after 9:00am.  A Parish Vigil Service for Walter will be held Monday at 7:00pm.  Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Family Wishes or St. Hedwig Church.

Elida Nuncio

Essexville, Michigan


     Elida passed away Friday, March 21, 2014 at McLaren Bay Region, age 73.  She was born December 7, 1940 in New Mexico to the late Cireldo and Guadalupe (Duran) Castillo.  She married Viviano Nuncio and he predeceased her in 1976.

Surviving are six children: Angela Gonzalas, Richard, Mary, Oscar, Daniel and Armando Nuncio.  Elida was predeceased by a daughter, Irene Nuncio on June 16, 2011.

Private Services were held.

Daniel R. Savage

Savage was greeted by our Heavenly Father and his loving wife Joan on Friday March 14, 2014 in Zephyrhills, Florida age 84 years.  He was born July 11, 1929 in Bay City.  Dan married the former Joan Hennen June 4, 1977 in St. Mary of the Assumption Church.  She predeceased him February 11, 2012.  Dan served in the U.S. Army.


Left to cherish his memories is his special nieces, nephews and cherished friends.  He was predeceased by seven brothers and four sisters.


Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday May 16, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. from St. Hedwig Church with private inurnment in St. Joseph Cemetery of West Branch.

Friends may call at the church only on Friday from 9:30 A.M. until time of mass.


Karen Fowler

Karen J. Fowler, age 59 of Rapid City, Michigan passed away peacefully early Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.  Karen was born December 6, 1954 in Cleveland, Ohio the daughter of Frank and Sophie Dorko, sister to Glenn and his wife Nancy, one brother Dan, Lorrie Watkins and her husband Bill, Sandy Hathaway and Susan Denk.  Karen was a long-time employee at Medical Mutual of Ohio where she enjoyed the friendship of many of her co-workers and where she met her loving husband Doug.  Karen and Doug married in Parma, Ohio and enjoyed 27 wonderful years together.  They enjoyed traveling, fishing, hiking, as well as shooting sports including cowboy action shooting where they competed together in shooting competitions in western-period costumes and settings.   Karen was also a member of the Single Action Shooting Society.

Karen and Doug moved to Elk Rapids, Michigan in 1996 becoming owners of the Harbor Café where they enjoyed the company of so many people who lived and visited that vacation community.  In recent years Karen had the pleasure of working at Milliken Medical in Traverse City, Michigan.

Karen was a remarkable person and a wonderful wife to Doug and she loved their dog Amand.  Karen will be missed by nephews Timothy and Jeremy sons of Glenn and Nancy, stepsons Mike (Marsha) Fowler and their children Alex, Chris and Andrea, Pat (Rachelle) Fowler and their children Brad, Kayl, Brook, and Brett, and Geoff (Stacey) Fowler.

Karen was truly a blessing to those who knew her, she will be greatly missed, but we take solace in knowing she is resting in peace.

Karen requested that no ceremony be performed.  Donations in her name may be made to the Chain O’ Lakes Sportsman’s Club, P.O. Box 765, Bellaire, MI 49615

Edgar D. “Corky” Worden

Corky passed away March 17, 2014 at McLaren Bay Region with his wife and family by his side, age 65.  He was born November 26, 1948 in Bay City to the late Edgar D. and Margaret (Claery) Worden.  Corky married Bonnie L. Jacob on January 22, 1999 and she survives him.  He worked at H. Hirschfield & Sons Company for many years when he was younger and currently Corky and his wife Bonnie owned and operated Trix’s Pub on Broadway.  Corky was a former member of the Eagles Aeries #1010 and a member of the Muskrat Club and the Moose Lodge in Harrison.  He loved to cook and BBQ in his back yard.  He also enjoyed entertaining his dog, Scruffy.

Surviving is his wife, Bonnie, one daughter Renae (John) Warner, two step-children, Kristal (John) Latimer and Marty (Becky) Jurish, seven grandchildren: John, Taylor, Amanda, Rae, Heather, Samantha and Ashley, eight step-great-grandsons and one sister, Patricia (Bill) Blade.  Corky was predeceased by one step-son, Michael Jurish and one brother Michael (Karen) Worden.

A Celebration of Corky’s Life will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 1:00pm at Trix’s Pub, 2307 Broadway Ave.  No visitation or services will be held at the Ambrose Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to “Family Wishes.”

James A. Sheufelt

Sheufelt-photo494James A. Sheufelt passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at his home age 71. He was born September 18, 1942 in Owendale, Michigan to the late Arthur and Eva Abbe.  Jim was a Journeymen Welder for the Union before retiring.  He enjoyed astrology and was a very good mechanic.


Surviving are two daughters and two sons: Eva (Joel) Monville, Frank Sheufelt, Cathern (Steven) Quinn, James Sheufelt and their mother, Sharon Sheufelt, nine grandchildren: Alexandra Vanderakker, Richard Monville, James, Dylan, Ryan & Samantha Sheufelt, Katelynn, Hunter, Zoey Quinn, four great-grandchildren: Josephine ,Waiverly, John and Bentley.  Also surviving are three brothers and a sister: Art, Dave & Jake Sheufelt and Cathern Krutchmer.


Funeral and Committal Service will take place Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. from the Squires Funeral Home.  Pastor Joe Atchinson will officiate with private burial in Owengage.  Friends may call at the Squires Funeral Home on Thursday from 3 – 7 P.M.  Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider family wishes.
