Bay City, Michigan

Our beloved mother & grandmother, has gone to be with her loving God, her husband & son on Friday, April, 19, 2013.  Age 96, mom passed peacefully at her home surrounded by her family.  She was born October 31, 1916 to Cooley Cash & Mary (Hart) Anderson in Flint, MI.  She worked as a bookkeeper & secretary until she married Carl W Zirwes on September 30, 1938 & moved to Bay City to raise a family.  They had 12 children and co-owned Carl’s Sewing Center on Columbus Ave until retirement.  Mary Jo was a loving wife & mother, worked as a salesperson & bookkeeper for the business, as well as having a full course meal ready on the table at 6:00 p.m. sharp 6 days a week.  All 12 children learned very young how to “Not be late for dinner.” We didn’t know how lucky we were having family time every day.  Mom was an amazing woman.  Mom & Dad both taught us the importance of family & hard work, being frugal and to love & thank God every day.  St James was our parish & school.

Mary Jo was a current member of St Mary of the Assumption Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of the K of C Council 414 for many years & helped with food for funerals at St James Church.  She & Dad were able to enjoy retirement with a couple of cruises with their dear friends & spent many winters in Florida. Their big love was their family, sharing large gatherings for the holidays, birthdays & other occasions.  She is survived by her children: William (Jan) Zirwes of Sanford, Joann (Harold) Timmons of TX, Judy (Tom) Ayotte, Gary (Gayle) Zirwes of Clarkston, Jerry (Maureen) Zirwes, Larry Zirwes of Kawkawlin, Janet Klida, Jackie (Mike) Hemingway of Morley, Jean (Rob) Rozek of TN, Randy (Karen) Zirwes of CT, Joy (Don) Lane of TN & daughter-in-law Jerry Zirwes of Jackson. Mom also has 31 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews.  She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Carl W & son, Carl Thomas, and son-in-law Rick Klida, her parents, brothers & sisters: Milton & Hart Anderson, Louise (Howard) Taylor, Dorothy (Franz) Schmelzer, Betty (Don) Fogel, sister in-law Mae (Jim) Stephen & special niece Helen (Don) McMillan.

We thank God for her special caring & loving ways.  Mom had a fabulous knack for cooking, and some of her favorites were chocolate fudge, apple pie, cookies & canned peaches.

Obviously with 12 children, Mom had a special way & love for the little ones.  They could sense it & loved being with her throughout her last days.

We’d like to thank God for our Mom & Dad & also the wonderful care from Dr. Janet Sutton for over 20 years & McLaren Hospice & Home Care for the last year.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 11:00am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church.  Fr. Craig Albrecht will celebrate Mass and private entombment will be in St. Patrick Mausoleum.  Friends may call at the church only on Tuesday from 10:00am to 11:00am.  Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St Mary of the Assumption Church, McLaren Hospice or Family Wishes.
