George Joseph Swierzbin

Our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on January 25, 2012 at age 88. George was born February 21, 1923 in Bay City to Alexander and Blanche (Widlowski) Swierzbin. He married Rita D. Satkowiak on June 15, 1946 at St. Stanislaus Church and she survives him. A graduate of Bay City Central High School and Northeastern School of Commerce, George worked for forty-one years at the Dow Chemical Company in Midland. He retired from his position of business operations planner in 1984. George was an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church for many years, where he served as business manager, education commission chairman, parish council member, lector and greeter. He was also chairman and member of the Saginaw Catholic Diocesan Board of Education, charter member and Grand Knight of St. Stephen Council Knights of Columbus 4102, board member and tutor for the Bay Area Literacy Council, and member of the Polish Heritage Society. George was a long-time volunteer for Bay City Public Schools and assisted Polish immigrants in learning English.

 

Surviving are his wife, Rita, and children, Randall T. (Barbara) Swierzbin of Midland, Bonnie J. Swierzbin (Tom McGee) of St. Paul, MN, Cynthia A. Roberts of Bay City, and John S. (Jane) Swierzbin of Sacramento, CA, and grandchildren, Laura, Emily and Ryan Swierzbin, Justin House, and Jennifer Roberts. George is also survived by his two sisters, Rita (Harold) Soper of Midland, and Florence Margherita of Lady Lake, FL, sisters-in-law, Alice Rezmer, Marguerite Petrimoulx, Mary Anna Satkowiak, brother-in-law Peter Satkowiak, and many nieces and nephews.

 

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father Robert Meissner will celebrate the Mass and interment will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at Squires Funeral Home on Sunday, January 29 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday after 10:00 a.m. A Parish Vigil Service for George will be held Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Bay Area Literacy Council, the Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic of Bay City, or Right to Life of Michigan.
