Harlan Fowler

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Harlan Fowler age 87 passed away peacefully Friday, August 12, 2011.  Harlan was born September 10, 1923 to the late William C and Cecilia (Mills) Fowler in Tawas, Michigan.  Harlan enjoyed the up-north country living style where he knew everyone, only wore shoes to school and would sneak out food and eat with the local train riders.  Growing up during this time he developed his unique knack of bird calling for fun and the skill of making or tinkering (as he called it) with anything out of necessity.  He brought these skills and his pleasant personality when the family moved to Bay City, Michigan in 1947.   Mr. Fowler was a veteran of WWII and was employed at the Defoe Shipyard and RWC until his retirement. Harlan married the late Florence Rezler.  He then built (mostly by hand) a subterranean home, which is still in existence today.  He didn’t have formal training in thermo-dynamics, he just had a degree in common sense.  He knew it was energy efficient and economical, we just thought it was cool.  Harlan spent his later life cooking new recipes that he collected and shared with everyone.  If this wasn’t enough, at age 70 he bought his first kayak, and along with his good friend Duke, they re-traveled the streams and rivers of his youth.

Harlan is survived by two sisters; Wanda Cieslinski and Marion Fowler, sister in-law; Lorraine Fowler and a variety of family and people who were fortunate enough to call him friend.

Funeral service will take place Wednesday August 17, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. from the Ambrose Funeral Home.  Rev. James A. Smith will officiate with burial in Floral Gardens Cemetery under the auspices of the Bay County Veteran’s Council.  Friends may call at the Ambrose Funeral Home on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service.
