Rev. Carl G. Avery

 Our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend Rev. Carl G. Avery age 74 passed away Wednesday morning September 30, 2009 at his son Peter’s home surrounded by his family.  Son of the late Irving & Mary (Putnam) Avery he was born February 8, 1935 in Tuscola, County.  He married the former Marilyn M. Lauber July 27, 1968.  She predeceased him August 29, 2004.  Rev. Avery worked many years at Saginaw Steering Gear before retiring.  After retirement Carl became Chaplain for the Bay Medical Center, Bay City Fire Department and the Bay County Sheriff Department.  Pastor Avery was a Lt. of  Civil Air Patrol, Vice President of the Skilled Trades Organization, Treasurer of the Full Gospel Businessmen Association, Pastor of Liberty Fellowship and was a Scout Master.

 Surviving are five sons and a daughter; Peter (Shannon), Phillip (Melissa), Jonathan (Amy), Michael (LeeAnn) Avery, Ruth Ann Tallman, Gershom (Judy) Avery, fifteen grandchildren; Austin, Marilyn, Shondra, Samantha, Shayna, Bruce, Rachel, Jennifer (Jim), Michael (Amanda), Kelli, Benjamin (Jonni), Matthew, Karen, Lisa, Paul and one great-granddaughter; Brooke.  Also surviving are one sister and a brother; Chloe Samuel, Duane (Sally) Avery and too many special friends to list.  He was predeceased by one sister and a brother.

 A special thanks to Sue Packard for making Carl’s last few months more comfortable.

 Funeral and committal service will take place Saturday October 3, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. from the Squires Funeral Home.  Carl’s son Peter Avery will officiate.  Friends may call at the Squires Funeral Home on Friday from 2 – 5 & 6 – 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 12 noon until time of service.  In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider family wishes.

Richard L. VanHamlin

Mr. VanHamlin died Friday morning September 25, 2009 at his home age 78 years.   Son of the late Clarence & Evelyn (Peters) VanHamlin he was born April 13, 1931 in Pinconning, Michigan.  He married the former Donna L. Lucas September 6, 1952 in Bay City.  She survives him.  Dick worked for VanHamlin Plastering and Drywall for many years before retiring.  He was a member of Tri-County Worship Center of Auburn and the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan.  Dick was an avid deer hunter.

 

Surviving besides his wife Donna he leaves three children; Cari (Donald) Figley, Lori (Wayne) Caspers, Richard D. VanHamlin, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are two sisters; Charlotte Alba and Joan (Gerald) Hegenauer.  He was predeceased by a son; Donald VanHamlin.

 

Funeral Service will take place Monday September 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the Ambrose Funeral Home.  Pastor Marc Alba will officiate with burial in Floral Gardens Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Ambrose Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 – 9 p.m. and on Monday after 10:00 a.m.  Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider family wishes.

Roy W. Porter

Our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday September 23, 2009 at the Zepher Haven Health & Rehab Center of Florida age 92 years.  He was born April 16, 1917 in Bay City to George and Mary (Erno) Porter.  He married Maxine A. Krell on September 20, 1940.  Roy worked at the Industrial Brownhoist from 1937 – 1978.  He enjoyed participating in the Senior Bowling Olympics.

 

He is survived by his three children; Dawn Houthoofd, Gail (Nick) Kaplenski all of Bay City, June Carpenter of Georgia, eight grandchildren; Craig (Jane) Kaplenski, Mark (Cindy) Kaplenski, Linda Hipel, Amy Houthoofd, Sarah Hipel, Laurie Davis, Robert (Rachel) Davis and Cari Henderson, many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.  Also surviving is one sister; Cleo (Art) Preston, one brother; George (Jeannene) Porter and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his wife Maxine Alice (Krell) Porter in 2004 and a son Donald W. Porter in 1979.

Ida M. Hadd

Ida Mabel Hadd, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at the Bay Medical Care Facility.  Ida was born April 15, 1924 in rural Bay County.  She married James Harold Hadd, Sr on November 29, 1942 in Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church of Linwood.  She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim (February 7, 2009) her sons, Timothy Joseph and Terry Wayne Sr.; her grandson, Stephen Hadd; her siblings: Arlene, Clara, Shirley, Violet, Lawrence, William.

Surviving are her children:  James Jr (Theresa), Robert (Debby), Mark (Ginger), David, Daniel (Sherry), Kathy (Ira) McKeon and Mary (Francis) Manyen and daughter-in-law, Linda Hadd; sixteen grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren (expecting two more); her brother George (Theresa) Charbonneau and a host of family members.

The family would like to thank the Bay Medical Care Facility staff for their compassion and continued care for both parents.

 According to Ida’s wishes cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Thomas L. Higgins

Bay City, Michigan

      Mr. Higgins, age 52 passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at Bay Regional Medical Center.  He was born April 9, 1957 in Bay City to William and Wanda Ellen (Kimball) Higgins.  Thomas married Janet L. Baird and she survives him.  He was a very talented jewelry marker and enjoyed the Native American Culture. 

     Surviving besides his wife, Janet, are two sons; Ryan and Chase Higgins and his mother, Wanda Ellen Higgins.  Also surviving is an uncle, many aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and good friends.  Thomas was predeceased by his father, William Higgins and an uncle. 

     Cremation has taken place.  The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 5:00pm at the Squires Funeral Home.  Pastor David Dunn will officiate.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 3:00 to 5:00pm.  Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to “Family Wishes.”

Mrs. Gunther died Saturday September 19, 2009 at the Bay Medical Care Facility age 84 years.  Daughter of the late Walter & Josephine (Zielinski) Walkowiak she was born September 1, 1925 in Bay City.  She married Melvin E. Gunther February 12, 1949 in St. Stanislaus Church.  He predeceased her August 16, 1995.  Rita was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Rosary/Altar Sodality group #30, Senior Citizens, Felician Sister’s Auxiliary and the League of Catholic Women and Men.

 Surviving is one daughter; Lynnette “Lynn” G. Duranczyk, three grandchildren; Jeremy (Esther) Duranczyk & their son Brendan, Matt Duranczyk and Samantha Shorkey & their daughter Brooklynn and Marc Duranczyk.  Also surviving is a sister; Rosemary Luptowski.  She was predeceased by two brothers; Paul (Lorraine) Walkowiak and Eugene (Elizabeth) ‘Betty” Walkowiak. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday September 23, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Stanislaus Kostka Church.  Rev. Fr. William J. Rutkowski will officiate with burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Ambrose Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 – 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday after 9:00 a.m.  There will be a parish vigil service for Rita at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.  Members of the Rosary/Altar Society, Senior Citizens and the Felician Sister’s Auxiliary will pray the rosary at the church on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.
